McAfee has come out with a new Facebook application that helps users protect their photos from being copied. This free app called McAfee Social Protection, would ensure that users’ photos are not shared without their permission.
“Only select friends can view the photos. It makes pictures appear blurry to everyone else. It gives users a safe platform to share the photos without having to worry about them going viral or being uploaded onto the Internet by someone else,’’ Brian Foster, Senior Vice-President of Consumer Product Management for McAfee, has said.
McAfee Social Protection works by allowing only selective friends of the user to view the photos, but even those friends will be unable to share, copy, print, or take screenshots of them. The screen capture tool will record a blank space, and the app will disable the save and download feature, displaying a padlock icon over the picture when a user scrolls over it.
“This unique lock feature is possible because when users upload protected photos through the app, those files go onto McAfee, rather than Facebook servers,’’ Foster adds.
Though one can always control the Facebook settings and make the photos visible only to friends, or hide it from certain people in the friends list, this app would provide users with a much-needed tool to further protect their privacy on the social networking site.
